A preliminary 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Los Angeles County on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 12:20 p.m. at a depth of nearly six miles, with the epicenter in Highland Park.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake rumbled underneath Los Angeles just past noon Monday.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter of the quake near Highland Park in the northeast of the city.

The quake was felt at least as far west as the west San Fernando Valley and as far south as Orange County.

Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 typically result in minor or no damage.

The temblor hit on the first day of school for Los Angeles Unified School District, the district reported that no damage to its schools had been caused by the quake in an email to USA Today.

Earlier this month, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake and a swarm of aftershocks in farmland almost 90 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles didn’t do much damage but did send the Los Angeles Fire Department’s 106 stations into earthquake mode, triggering a land, sea and air survey.
