Few days after President Obama was sworn in as president of the United States, Mitch McConnell declared to his Republican party that his number goal was to make sure President Obama was a one-term president. He stocks to his pledges and became the biggest obstruction to any and all Obama policies. In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said: “One of my proudest moments was when I told Obama, ‘You will not fill this Supreme Court vacancy,'”.
In March 2016, following the death of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, a Reagan appointee and one of the more conservative voices on the court, President Obama nominated federal appellate judge Merrick Garland, who was described as “centrist” by the mainstream media and “left-leaning” by those on the right, to fill the vacancy. He did this despite the fact that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky had already announced — on the day Scalia died — that the Republican-controlled Senate had no intention of confirming any nominee chosen by Obama.
Trump and the Republican party have made their stake and openly declared that going forward, their sole purpose of the organization is to destroy Democracy in America, since it no longer favors their “white supremacy ” agenda.
In that, McConnell is the living, breathing, calculating face of everything that is wrong with our current politics. To the extent to which our system has become dysfunctional, McConnell is the single chief architect of that sclerosis. President Donald Trump’s blunder and wrecking ball, but McConnell was undermining the system well before Trump and his legacy will no doubt outlast him.
