Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota on Monday said video footage of Border Patrol agents on horseback whipping Haitian migrants attempting to cross the US-Mexico border showed “human rights abuses.”
“These are human rights abuses, plain and simple. Cruel, inhumane, and a violation of domestic and international law,” Omar said in a tweet. “This needs a course correction and the issuance of a clear directive on how to humanely process asylums seekers at our border.”
Apart from Rep. Omar, many Black leaders, and Democrats have remained silent as Americans once again engage in overt racist immigration practices toward Haitians.
In 2018, twice impeached and one-term President Trump ignited an uproar when he referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries”. While Trump simply exposed the racist premise that has driven American policy toward Haiti for the entirety of our history, other American presidents have done the worst and continue to implement racist immigration policies towards Haitians that are actually fleeing a country at war and devastated by repeated earthquakes.

In 1804, the Haitian revolution succeeded despite Washington’s efforts to sabotage the Haitians war for libration. Since Hiatians’ independence, as the very first Black nation to revolt and defeat slavery and France, the United States has in many ways attempt to dismiss Haiti’s existence. For almost six decades after Saint-Domingue’s rebirth as the independent nation of Haiti, the United States refused to grant it diplomatic recognition and enforced a trade embargo, and adopt racist immigration policies aim at Haitians.

The shameful distinction between the treatment of Haitians and Cubans is perhaps the best example that illustrates these racist immigration policies. U.S.-Cuba immigration strategy is welcoming, while desperately fleeing Haitians are instantly interdicted back to their island. Is not surprising that the majority of Cubans in America vote for Republican candidates like Trump.
President Joe Biden‘s administration is ramping up the deportation of Haitians, with increased flights leaving Del Rio, Texas. Associated Press is reporting up to eight flights a day will depart to send migrants back to the Caribbean nation struggling with natural disasters and political turmoil.
NOTE! While Acosta noted to Mayorkas on Sunday that America has welcomed at least 50,000 Afghans who aided the U.S. war effort in their homeland, but is sending back Haitian refugees fleeing political crisis and natural disasters.
While Republicans are quick to condemn Biden for not evacuating the entire women and children from Afghanistan, they are quick to advocate for violence against their next-door neighbors who are fleeing political and natural disaster.. simply because of the color of their skin.. If Haitians were two shades lighter, if Haitians were Caucasians(White) neighboring country…. the reaction and policy would have been different …
