The Nigerian basketball team slammed ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on Monday after a rant on “First Take” in which he clearly, and seemingly purposefully, butchered their name, mock and insult them for daring to bear their African Names. For Stephen A. Smith, it would be better for these Nigerians to just have slave names like his… His attitude and ignorance epitomize the “Uncle Tom” mentality prevalent in American especially in some segments of African American so-called elites.
This is exactly what needed to said about TEAM USA!!! pic.twitter.com/duH385AlwR

As a Nigerian-American CEO, I have on numerous business meetings or social gatherings experience ignorant people like Stephen mock, ridicule, and purposely miss pronounce my name. For people like Stephen, their ignorance is detrimental and further drives the gap that exists between Africans and African Americans.. In their quest to please the “Man” and fit into the confine of white supremacists, they think that belittling and mocking names that sound different from theirs make them belong to their imaginary world..
On the other hand, the same Stephen has no problem pronouncing other European basketball players’ names… The best example of this is the famous movie star and former California governor’s last name; Schwarzenegger.. which means in German; “Black-N word. What I find fascinating with people like Stephen is their ability to pronounce and respect other names, except African names.
This attempt to deny, refuse to accept and respect Africans and their names are not new… if you think otherwise, watch Roots, and please pay attention to the efforts made to dehumanize Kunta Kente.. in the process of trying to rename him… He who names you owns you..
