The Portland Police Bureau announced Thursday that its entire Rapid Response Team made of mostly white officers left their voluntary positions on squad Wednesday after a fellow officer was indicted on an assault charge for allegedly using “excessive” and “unlawful” force during a protest last August.
The Portland police department has a history of lack of accountability. Tuesday’s indictment of officer Corey Budworth is the first time a Portland police officer has faced prosecution for striking or firing at someone during a protest, according to The Oregonian.
Many experts view this as the first step in getting rid of police miss conduct. As cameras, and public scrutiny increase, many police will voluntarily quick. This mass resignation will allow room for new hire and recruitment and new training that will allow the police to function well for every member of society.
